What kind of insect beetle is this?

My friends and I found this really big beetle like creature on the wall outside her house. Unfortunately none of us would get close enough to take a picture of it but it was huge and had antennas and no wings. I don't think it was a roach because it just sat there and only moved its antennas when the dogs barked. But it was humongous and the antennas were really big too. It had to be one of the scariest bugs I've ever seen. We live in North Carolina if that helps.
